Policies and Procedures
Bright Eyes Day Care Settling In Policy
At Bright Eyes Nursery we understand how difficult it is for parents to leave their child in a nursery and return to work. We will therefore work with you to ensure your child is settled and that you are happy with the care that we are to provide.
We like to organise settling in sessions for the parents and child. This gives you the opportunity to provide us with lots of information about your child, their likes and dislikes, routines, favourite activities, how to comfort them if they become upset and how they have reacted when left before. It gives us the opportunity to start to build a relationship with you and your child and to understand both your needs and wishes.
We are happy for you to stay until you feel that your child is settled. Some children take longer than others to settle and some settle quickly then become distressed a few weeks into the placement. We will work with you to support your child through this transition period and make it as easy as possible. It is important that you and your child are relaxed and happy in our setting and with the care we provide.
Some parents find it helpful to call us during the day to find out how their child is.
Bright Eyes Day Care Sick Child Policy
We appreciate that as a parent you need to be able to go to work, however if your child is
unwell then they will be better cared for in their own home with a parent. We are happy to care for children with minor coughs and colds, but we will not care for children who are very unwell, infectious or running a high temperature. We have to consider all of the children in our care.
If your child has sickness or diarrhoea in the last 24 hours please do not bring them in, but do call to let us know.
If your child becomes ill whilst in our care, we will keep them as comfortable as possible and reassure them. We will contact you immediately and continue to care for your child until you arrive.
We are happy to administer any prescribed medication. If your child is prescribed antibiotics we ask for you to keep your child at home for a full 24 hours at least to allow the antibiotics to get into their and to start fighting the infection.
WE WILL NOT ADMINISTER ANY UNPRESCRIBED MEDICATION AND THIS INCLUDES CALPOL AND COUGH MEDICINES.
Bright Eyes Day Care Medicine Policy
At Bright Eyes we will only administer medicines that have been prescribed by a Doctor, this includes calpol and cough mixtures.
We will ask you to complete a medication form so we know when your child needs their medication and how much. You will be asked to sign at the start of the day to give consent for us to administer the medication and also at the end of the day to acknowledge that your child has had their medication at the right time and that it was the correct dose. You have to sign the medication form each day and the qualified staff member who has administered the medication signs signs and dates the form and this is then witnessed signed by another staff member.
All medication you give us to administer has to be in the original bottles with the doctors label clearly visible. If the medication comes in a box with the doctors label on you will need to bring the box so we are able to administer the medication.
We will ensure that all medication is stored correctly and is within its expiry date.
If your child needs medication on a regular basis such as an inhaler we will ask you to complete a Medical Health Care Plan and bring in an inhaler that will be kept in the office in case of an emergency.
If your child has acute allergies and carries an Epipen please discuss this with us as we may need to update our training.
Bright Eyes Day Care Accident Policy
The safety of your child is paramount and we will take every measure we can to protect
your child from hurting themselves. However sometimes accidents do happen and we have written the following procedure on how we will deal with such a situation:
- We will comfort and reassure the child.
- We will assess the extent of their injuries and if necessary call for an ambulance.
- We will carry out First Aid procedures that are necessary and that we are trained to do.
- If necessary we will contact you and ask you to collect your child or to meet us at the hospital.
After every accident, however minor we will:
- Complete a report in our accident book which will be co signed by a senior member of staff.
- Ask you to sign the report when you collect your child.
If the accident requires any medical treatment then we will:
- Inform Ofsted on 08456 404040.
- Inform our insurance company.
It is important that you keep us informed regarding your child’s condition following an accident and if you have sought medical advice.
Bright Eyes Day Care Managing Behaviour Policy
Promoting positive behaviour is very important and we do this by:
- Giving lots of praise for good behaviour.
- Giving the children individual attention so they feel valued.
- Setting a good example and being a good role model.
- Listening to what the children have to say.
- Rewarding good behaviour (choosing an activity, being helping hands).
- Giving the children certificates/stickers to take home and show their parents/siblings.
We help the children understand that there are rules, which are realistic and we are consistent in the enforcing of them.
We are aware of the different reasons why children misbehave and will endeavour to keep routines so your child feels safe and is not over tired or hungry.
However all children misbehave at sometime. We have developed several different strategies on how to deal with a child misbehaving and use different ones depending on the age/stage of ability of the child and the situation:
- Distraction. Remove the child from the situation and give them an alternative activity.
- Ignore. Depending on the situation we may ignore bad behaviour as we feel it is being done to get a reaction.
- Discuss with the child. If the child is able to understand we will discuss their behaviour and try to get them to appreciate the consequences of their actions on others.
- Time out. Removing the child from the activity and sitting them quietly for a few minutes.
WE WILL NEVER SMACK, SHAKE OR HURT YOUR CHILD. WE WILL NOT HUMILIATE YOUR CHILD.
If a child misbehaves we will let you know by writing it in our behaviour/incident book which you will be asked to sign and speaking to you when you collect your child. You will be told what the incident was about and how it was dealt with.
If you have any concerns regarding the managing of your child’s behaviour please do not hesitate to contact us. It is important that we work together on managing behaviour in order not to confuse your child.
Bright Eyes Day Care Hygiene Policy
It is important to prevent the spread of germs and illnesses that hygiene procedures are
in place and strictly adhered to.
Children are encouraged to wash their hands after going to the toilet, having their nappies changed, touching animals and playing outside. They must also wash their hands before eating any meals or snacks.
We will assist the children in hand washing, ensuring that they are washing and drying them correctly. Hand dryers are in use for the children.
We will assist the children to clean their teeth after lunch and ask you to provide a toothbrush and some toothpaste in their own individual toiletry bay which is clearly labelled with their full name.
We will assist the children in wiping and blowing their noses and explain the importance of throwing away dirty tissues to prevent the spread of germs. We will also encourage the children to put their hands over their mouths when they cough.
We will disinfect the changing mats in between children.
We will follow strict hygiene routines in the kitchen, ensuring that the fridge is at the correct temperature and that food is stored correctly.
We will not look after a child who has had an upset stomach in the last 24 hours.
